My name is Elizabeth Nabukeera, the current Programme Assistant of Uganda Studies Programme (USP), Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono. I am a 2019 alumnus of UCU and of Honors College, a leadership development programme for distinguished students. I am very humbled and pleased to be a part and serve with the programme for the year 2022.
Being a former student of Honors College, I was able to grow and develop my leadership skills, had spiritual growth and cross-cultural growth having had a platform and interaction with the USP programme. As an Honors College Scholar I was involved in writing well-researched and relevant papers and making presentations of the same papers to my peers; the presentations would be critiqued and this experience always helped me grow as an academic and a researcher.
This experience built my self-esteem and confidence, developed my leadership skills and built me into the person I am now. Uganda studies programme is an exchange programme that involves American and or Canadian students that travel abroad to study but also get a cross-cultural African experience in Uganda through the different activities carried on by the programme, these include having different practicums/ internships in the different sites in Uganda, Mukono homestays, rural homestays, study trips to either Rwanda or Northern Uganda, etc, all these expose and equip the students to the diversity of African cultures. Uganda studies programme and Honors College have a relationship and partnership that has been in existence, which calls for carrying out some activities that benefit either department.
As a Programme Assistant with USP, some of the roles and duties that I ought to do include: servicing as a cultural guide to the USP students, helping to familiarize them with life in Uganda as well as UCU, Mukono and Kampala, engaging in formal and informal discussions with the students regarding the issues they face in their studies and experiences in Uganda, complete administrative tasks liaise between USP and Honors college departments particularly in the coordination and facilitation of USP/Honors College academic in-service activities and events, which include leadership meetings, academic mentorships, etc.
It’s such a great privilege to be back home but most importantly to be working and serving with the Uganda studies programme and Honors College.
