How the pandemic has shaped business at the Honours College

BY ODIDI JEHOSHAPHAT

The Honours College initiative had its first virtual Leadership Development Class on 18th February 2021.

This was done in conformity to the set COVID-19 SOP’s.

Online sessions have since become the trend of learning, especially during the leadership workshops and writing clinics as the college struggled to adapt to the new normal.

Other college activities like the USP welcome party, Morning glory and Ladies and Gents Evening have also been attended to through the online setting.

According to the scholars, the challenges faced due to online learning include; poor internet connection, need for gadgets one can use, financial costs of maintaining internet connection and so on.

However, despite these challenges, Honors College has continued to adapt to the situation and this has allowed the scholarly community to record multiple forms of success.

A good example of one the successes is the first virtual workshop that was graced by the presence of Mrs. Patty Huston-Holm, an accomplished published writer, and instructor.  During the online session, she taught scholars important tips of effective writing. She went on to differentiate between an A paper and a B paper among others. During the same development class, Ms. Birungi Cynthia Muhumuza presented a paper, Preparedness for Technological Adaptability.

Achieving this first online success shaped a new age for Honors College and cemented the College’s ability to evolve and adapt to unprecedented situations.

Other highlights of success include the Ladies’ and Gents’ evenings which have been held twice so far, the remodeling of the Honors College website and the re-introduction of the Moodle platform to add convenience to online learning.

Uganda Christian University has now opened up the campus grounds to resume physical studies and activities; business however will be run using a blended approach.

This creates the prospect for Honors College to resume her physical activities such as morning jogging, Wednesday Morning-Glory in Thelma Hall, physical leadership workshops, and many other events that have been long missed. We have been looking forward to holding a physical fellowship!

Honors college remains hopeful for the future in a time where creativity and relevance account for community success.
