The Honours College is a constituent program of Uganda Christian University and its Leadership Development Initiative. Conceived in May 2002, the Initiative is a response to the urgent need for Christian leadership in the country.
The Honours College is the “home” for students who have been chosen for their leadership potential. We believe that effective learning and career preparation cannot be done in isolation. Rather, it is enhanced in a community of love, care and support. Honours College provides its students with such a community.
Honours College, thus, existing as a community of learning, draws heavily from Paolo Freire’s celebrated statement,
” What we learn most powerfully shaped by those with we learn”
This statement forms the philosophy for this community of learning. It underscores the corporate nature of the learning process, and the Honours College is a place where students are nurtured.
The corporate nature of the learning process necessarily makes the Honours College more than simply another hall of residence for the University. It is a place where students will be helped to grow in all faculties of life – intellectually, socially, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually – through interacting with each other and with their resident scholars and leaders in Church and community.
The Honours College takes seriously its duty and responsibility of providing the context in which students’ potential will be enhanced. Having accepted to become a member of the college, students commit themselves to an institution whose aim is simply to nurture them. Programmes that are designed, opportunities and resources available aim at doing exactly this.
