In line with our commitment to giving back to the community, Honours College organised a community service project dubbed the Anti-Pornography Campaign
The anti-pornography campaign was a research paper chosen from the many research papers to work as a service project for the Trinity semester at Honours College. The theme of the campaign was Covenant with the Eyes.
It was an initiative of one Buyinza Solomon, a student at Honours College pursuing a Bachelor of Laws.
The campaign against pornography was conducted both physically and online via our social media handles such as Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp.
The anti-pornography campaign spanned a duration of one week, running from June 26th to July 1st, 2023. It commenced with an online initiative across our social media platforms, complemented by the distribution of flyers and the sharing of campaign videos. On Thursday, June 28th, 2023, we conducted a Twitter space session. Our panelists for the day featured Madam Tumwebaze Pamela, the Head of the Honours College department, and Mr. Mugabi Joshua, a businessman and family man. The session encompassed a comprehensive discussion on the origins of pornography, its repercussions, and strategies for overcoming it, with a wealth of information shared.
On July 1st, we concluded our campaign with a launch addressing the issue of pornography. We featured distinguished speakers, including Mr. Ahabwe Jones, a lawyer and administration practitioner, Mr. Solomon Buyinza, an Honors College student, Mr. Martin Juuko, a legal expert, Ms. Nakaziba Naomi, a registered midwife and family planning consultant, and Mr. Senyonga Paul, an alumnus of Uganda Christian University. During the event, the panelists delved into various aspects of pornography, discussing its impact on individuals’ health, spiritual well-being, and the potential for addiction. Most importantly, they highlighted strategies for gradually overcoming this issue.
To extend the campaign’s outreach, we invited neighbouring secondary schools like St. Francis Borgia Secondary School and Bishop Senior Secondary School. This service project had the primary goal of educating and creating awareness among young students, equipping them with knowledge to make informed choices concerning pornography consumption. We were pleased to see participation from secondary schools in the vicinity, with some Honours College students also in attendance.
In summary, the campaign effectively achieved its objective of increasing awareness about the detrimental effects of pornography and promoting a commitment to safeguarding one’s eyes from its influence. Through a combination of physical events and online platforms, the campaign successfully engaged the community, local schools, and students in substantive conversations on this pressing issue. Maintaining ongoing efforts and open dialogues remains crucial in addressing the adverse impacts of pornography and fostering healthier perspectives on sexuality and relationships.
